For partners and graduates

Partners in Policymaking is a program designed to empower both individuals with disabilities and parents of those with developmental disabilities to use their voices. Throughout the training, participants acquire valuable resources, connect with and learn from different speakers, and build skills that allow them to pursue their dreams and create positive change within their communities. Since it began in 1987, Partners in Policymaking has been offered both nationally and internationally. Today, more than 1,100 graduates have completed the program in Minnesota.

Are you a person with a disability, or do you have a child with a developmental disability?

If so, join us for the 2022-2023 Partners in Policy program! Class 40 is now accepting applications, open to all Minnesota residents with disabilities and parents of children with developmental disabilities. Apply by July 15th here! The program begins in September 2022 and concludes in May 2023. Class participants will meet on Fridays and Saturdays in Bloomington, Minnesota on a monthly basis for conversation, educational seminars, and various types of programming. A commitment to attending each in-person session is required to be considered for the program.

There is no fee to attend this training. For participants driving a distance to join the program, overnight accommodations are provided. Meals, educational materials, and translation services are also covered for all class members. Reimbursement for mileage and childcare during weekend gatherings are available as well.

Following the program, graduates leave with leadership skills, preparedness to overcome challenges, and a lifelong group of advocates from the program, maintained with the support of a Facebook group.

Insight From Previous Graduates

“Partners has given me the confidence and direction for where I want to go and what I want to do as an advocate for myself and others.” —Nichole, self-advocate

“Before taking the training, I felt at a loss most of the time about what was right for me to expect of others so I could help my daughter to have the opportunities that every typical child has. Partners has given me the strength to stand up and advocate for my child’s rights as an equal person in society, and it has made me more aware of the laws and rights of all people.” —Parent

“The Partners weekend became my oasis, retreat, life lesson, training, adventure and enlightenment all rolled into one. When I joined Partners, my whole world changed. I began to look at [my daughter] from a different perspective. Once I realized how she can enjoy life, we took her to Florida to Disneyworld. When we set out on our trip, my daughter pleasantly surprised us. Not only did she enjoy the entire trip, but she was so happy. She behaved appropriately. It was an eye opener for us. We realized her potential. She is no longer just a passive, nonresponsive girl anymore. She is a vibrant, smiling, full of life girl. If I had not done Partners, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.” —Rijuta, parent
