Spotlight on the Artists: The Secret to LAMF’s Success

How a Fresh Approach Helped Transform the Lakes Area Music Festival into Minnesota’s Premier Musical Celebration

Since its modest beginnings in 2009 as a series of six free concerts organized by locals passionate about bringing world-class music to Brainerd, Minnesota, the Lakes Area Music Festival (LAMF) has grown into a dazzling three-week celebration. Featuring over 250 elite artists from renowned orchestras and opera companies around the world, the festival now showcases a rich array of performances, including chamber music, opera, ballet, and symphonic orchestras. Driven by the community’s enduring enthusiasm for musical enrichment, LAMF has continually expanded, now offering educational experiences such as pre-concert talks, open rehearsals, a children’s day camp, and more to engage audiences of all ages.

This year, LAMF embraced a fresh approach by Russell Herder to its communication and promotion strategy by spotlighting the musicians and their exceptional talents. The impact was undeniable: the website saw impressive growth, with a 113% increase in visitors and a 115% rise in page views. Paid advertisements on Google and Facebook played a pivotal role, driving 22% of the visits, with Facebook alone accounting for 54% of the referrals. By closely monitoring metrics such as social media engagement and ticket sales, and maintaining consistent media coverage, LAMF made data-driven adjustments that amplified their success.

These results highlighted a powerful connection between fan engagement and the popularity of the artists, showcasing the musicians as stars within the music community. By elevating the performers, LAMF positioned itself as a premier platform for emerging talent, enhancing its appeal, and attracting top-tier acts. This strategy spurred growth and fostered a loyal community of festivalgoers who return year after year.

As the music festival landscape continues to evolve, LAMF’s commitment to investing in its artists and spotlighting the musicians will be key to its ongoing success. With its unique blend of world-class performances and community spirit, LAMF stands out as a one-of-a-kind experience in Minnesota. The festival’s future is bright, promising continued growth and an ever-expanding legacy as a beloved musical event.
